William Stanley was born in 1562 and died September 29, 1642. He was the 6th Earl of Derby, K.G. His wife Elizabeth Vere was the daughter of Edward Vere the 7th Earl of Oxford. William Stanley was originally buried in Chester, England. His body was re-interred at Ormskirk Derby Chapel on June 30, 1662. William Stanley bought from his nieces, daughters of Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby , their right to the Isle of Man after Ferdinando's death. His brother had no male heirs. William and Ferdinando were the grandsons of Mary Dowager, Queen of France and sister of Henry VIII. William was appointed Chamberlain of Chester for life. Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby died suddenly on April 16, 1594 supposedly poisoned by the Jesuits because he refused to join in an intrigue to obtain possession of the crown of France, by right of his grandmother, Mary Dowager who was queen of France. Having no sons, the earldom fell to his brother William. His Lordship married Alice Spencer, daughter of Sir John Spencer of Althorp. They had three daughters: Ann Stanley, who married Grey Bruges, Lord Chandos; Frances, who married Sir John Egerton, Earl of Bridewater and Elizabeth, who married Henry Hastings, Earl of Huntington. Alice, Ferdinandos wife married Lord Ellesmere, Lord High Chancellor after Ferdinandos death. She died on January 26, 1635. At an early age, William Stanley displayed an enterprising and martial spirit and a love of foreign travel. His intelligence and agreeable conversational abilities made him a great favorite with his noble father who allowed him to travel for three years on the continent. He first sailed to France where the young English nobleman displayed his courage and superior knowledge of military tactics. In France he formed an acquaintance with the customs of the country and visited the Universities and seats of learning. He than travelled to Spain where he challenged a Spanish Nobleman to single combat. Sir William won by inflicting a wound to the gallant Don's chest. While not mortal it bled so much that the duel was ended. He then travelled to Italy, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey and Russia. Upon receiving word of his brothers death he hurriedly returned to England. Earl William Stanley stood high in the estimation of King James I.

James Stanley, Seventh Earl of Derby was born 31, January, 1606. He married Charlotte de la Tremouille, daughter of Claude de la Tremouille. She became famous for her defense of Lathom House in 1644, when it was besieged by 2000 parliamentarians, and of the Isle of Man in 1651. By this union, James became allied to the houses of Nassau and Bourbon, and to most of the Sovereign Princes of Europe. This Earl was distinguished for his attachment to the royal cause during the civil war, and falling into the parliament's hands after the battle of Worchester, was beheaded for treason on October 15, 1651. He was succeeded by his eldest son Charles, Lord Strange, who became the Eighth Earl of Derby. His Lordship was summoned to Parliament, by writ from the 7th of March, 1627 to November 1639 as Baron Strange, under an impression that such a Barony was enjoyed by his father; that, however was not the case. The summons amounted to the creation of a new peerage, which eventually devolved upon the ducal house of Atholl. King Charles 1, appointed Lord Strange a joint Lord Lieutenant of Landcashire and Chester in 1626. Charlotte by her mother was the Granddaughter of William, Prince of Orange. James made a grand tour of Europe in 1625. On the 25th of May, 1644 Prince Rupert and a large Royalist army invaded Landcashire. Earl James joined it victoriously at Bolton and Liverpool. Later in 1644 by the order of the King he went to the Isle of Man to protect England from sea invasion during the Civil War. Prince Rupert remained in command in Landcashire from 1644 to 1651 and James remained on the Isle of Man. In 1650 the Earls daughters were imprisoned in England to put pressure on the Earl. The Earl was defeated in the battle of Wigan Lane the 25th of August and Worchester on the 3rd of September, 1651. He was beheaded at Bolton the 15th of October, 1651. James daughter Amelia married John Murray, 2nd Earl and First Marquis of Atholl in whose descendents the Isle of Man and the Barony of Strange became invested.
