In 1194-9 5 he offered 300 marks to haveseisin of the barony which was of his mother's brother, Gervase Paynel;and in the same year was returned as owing 50 l. scutage for the King'sransom. In November 1193 he had been at Speyer with the King. In1199-1200 he was in the King's service overseas; in 1201-02 he paid afine of 100 marks for 50 knights not to cross; in 1202/3 he was directedto take from the Jews of Domfront 50 l, to pay soldiers. By charter dated23 August 1204 the King granted him the manor of Mere in exchange for themanor of Wolverhampton. In the same year he is recorded as having held ½fee at Rouilli (in the Passeis). Only Aquitaine seemed permanent, helped by the loyalty of the Gascon people to their distant Duke. To these inhabitants the King of France was more remote and foreign' than the King of England. Richard the Lionheart had reinforced his position by frequent sojouns in Bordeaux and Poitiers. His mother Queen Eleanor preferred to spend as much time as possible there, but the trouble endured by John made him an infrequent visitor, and Henry III waited fourteen years into his reign before visiting the Duchy.
